Of late, ecotourism has become popular in the tribal villages around Santiniketan. It is a type of Special Interest Tourism that has emerged recently and has evoked concern among social scientists. This form of niche tourism is essentially rural in character. Ecotourism combines nature tourism, wilderness tourism and agri-tourism. Around Santiniketan, there exist a number of tribal villages inhabited by the Santhal tribe. The place has an idyllic setting and offers enchanting scenic beauty, with a typical rural ambience. It is a place where ecotourism and rural tourism go hand in hand. Santiniketan, in the Birbhum District of West Bengal, and its environs, provide ample scope for the development of ecotourism. In the western part of the state of West Bengal in India is located Santiniketan – Tagore’s “Abode of Peace.” The place is the site of Visva Bharati, a world reknowned residential university as well as a Brahmacharya Asrama established by Rabindranath Tagore himself. Hence the space with its repository of lingering images emerges as a character and a source of rejuvenation. For writers who are artists, such as Rani Chanda, Paritosh Sen and Manindra Gupta, the memories become visually eloquent and colourful and as a result the space itself is drawn as an artefact through imagistic language. In spite of the deep and definite sense of loss along with the trauma of being uprooted from one’s birthplace, the reveries associated with these memoirs appear resourceful in a constructive way, nourishing the creative soul of the writers. The memory related to the Partition thus involves violence, loss and terror as reflected in the post-Partition fictional, theatrical and poetic creations, whereas a focus on the post-Partition non-fictional Bangla memoirs tells a different story. The psychological trauma within the nation was caused by physical dislocation from one place and cultural adaptation in another. In the Indian subcontinent, the political manoeuvre of the Partition led to a social calamity.
